Mammograms are the most effective way to detect breast cancer before there are any signs or symptoms of the disease. Doctors recommend women age 40 or older should have an annual mammogram. However, if you have a family history of breast cancer, women are encouraged to speak to their doctor about getting a mammogram sooner.
Digital mammography is a quick, low-dose x-ray of the breast. There are two types of mammograms. The first is a screening mammogram used to check for breast cancer when there are no signs or symptoms of the disease. The second is a diagnostic mammogram used to further evaluate a breast lump or other symptom to check for the possible presence of breast cancer.
Best images: At Anne Arundel Diagnostics (AADI), we use digital images exclusively which means a better exam for you with the lowest radiation exposure possible, including 3D mammography. Subtle differences may be more easily noted between normal and abnormal tissues. This also reduces the need for follow-up procedures. Board-certified radiologists, with special training and interest in breast imaging, interpret every mammogram performed in each of AADI’s locations. We exceed the American College of Radiology’s breast imaging requirements. Breast ultrasound and breast MRI are also available at AADI.
The facts: AADI was first in Maryland to earn the Breast Imaging Center of Excellence designation, first in Anne Arundel County to offer stereotactic breast biopsies and first to open a comprehensive breast health center which includes AAMC’s Risk Assessment and Prevention Program. Following the American Cancer Society's guidelines for early detection of breast cancer improves the chances of early diagnosis and successful treatment. Women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year.
Preparing: All you need is a doctor’s order. Do not wear any cologne, perfume, deodorant or powder before your mammogram. Pre-menopausal patients with breast tenderness during their period may want to have a mammogram after their cycle. Comparison of your current mammogram to past mammograms is important. If you had a mammogram at any AADI location, the staff will retrieve your past exam results for you.
